August is Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), a global celebration dedicated to recognizing and advancing giving, leadership, and funding equity in Black communities. Founded in 2011 by Dr. Jacqueline Bouvier Copeland, BPM has grown into a movement in more than 60 countries, amplifying the voices of Black donors, leaders, and changemakers.
This year, BPM continues under the BackBlack movement, which is focused on building long-term infrastructure, channeling resources, and strengthening the capacity of Black-led nonprofits. Locally, Vancity Community Foundation (VCF) is leading the call to action by amplifying and fundraising for Black-led and Black-serving organizations that are making a meaningful difference in their communities.
Featured Organizations
Vancity Community Foundation’s mission is to work with communities to create the economic, social, and environmental conditions for everyone to thrive. The 2025 Black Philanthropy Month campaign is focused on raising awareness and resources for the following organizations:
Daughters of Hope Resources Society
Works to reduce and prevent homelessness by providing wrap-around support services for Black and racialized individuals and families facing unique challenges in accessing dignified housing. Connects people to culturally appropriate resources so that needs can be addressed effectively.
Ethos Lab Educational Society
Addresses the needs of diverse youth in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) by fostering belonging, creativity, and leadership through mentorship and programming.
Hogan’s Alley Society
Advances the well-being of people of African descent through culturally rooted housing, community development, and economic empowerment. Includes initiatives to restore Hogan’s Alley through affordable housing and a Black Cultural Centre.
Umoja Operation Compassion Society
Promotes unity, respect, and dignity among minority immigrants and refugees. Offers trauma-informed programs that address socio-economic marginalization and support integration into Canadian society.
Why This Work Matters
Equity-focused philanthropy is about more than financial contributions. It is about shifting power, amplifying underrepresented voices, and addressing the systemic barriers that prevent communities from thriving. Black Philanthropy Month is a reminder that the most effective solutions come from those with lived experience.
For more than 35 years, VCF has worked alongside communities to ensure that resources are available to build a thriving and equitable society. Their new strategic plan prioritizes funding for Indigenous and Black communities, with a focus on restoring affordability, advancing climate justice and resilience, and creating connected, just communities. Achieving these goals requires collective effort from individuals, businesses, and institutions.
